What is Ligue 1?
Ligue 1 is France’s premier soccer division and is one of the highest-ranked European football leagues. It has a rich history, and many of the best players in the world have plied their trade for teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, and Lyon over the years.
Here, we explain how you can bet on France’s Ligue 1 at Stake online sportsbookand introduce you to some of the most common soccer bet types available as you make your selections.
History of Ligue 1
Although football has long since been played in France, it wasn’t made a professional sport until 1930. The National Council of the French Football Federation voted in favour of professionalism, paving the way for the modern Ligue 1 to develop. The 1932-33 season was France’s inaugural all-professional soccer league, but it wasn’t until 2002 that Ligue 1 was created in its current guise.
Over the years, French football went through many changes, with new clubs and formats changing the way the competition works. Since it was founded, there have been a total of 75 clubs taking part in Ligue 1. Today, Montpellier, Nice, Marseille and Rennes are the only founding clubs to still play in the competition.
Paris Saint-Germain are the most successful team in Ligue 1 history, with 11 titles. Their success has been relatively recent, following a takeover from Qatar royalty that led to marquee signings like Neymar Jr, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe.
Marseille remains the only French team to have won a UEFA Champions League title. Currently, the French league is ranked fifth in the European coefficient, behind major European soccer leagues in England, Spain, Italy and Germany . The coefficient affects the seeding for European competitions such as the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League .

Format & Schedule of the 2024–25 Ligue 1
Ligue 1 features 18 teams which compete in a round-robin league. Each team plays every other team in the league twice, once at home and once away. A win earns three points, while one point is earned by drawing a game, and a loss is none.
At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champions, while the bottom two teams are automatically relegated. The 16th-placed team plays a two-legged relegation playoff with the promotion playoff winner of Ligue 2 . The winner gets to play in Ligue 1 the following season. If points are tied, goal difference and then goals scored are used to determine league standings.
Here are the key dates for the Ligue 1 2024-25 season:
Opening fixture: August 16, 2024
Final day of the season: May 17, 2025
In addition to Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, you can also bet on the Coupe de France and the French under 19 championship at Stake Sportsbook. The Coupe de France is open to all professional and amateur football clubs in France.

Props: Prop bets can include a wide range of different options. These bets typically aren’t related to the match result, but can include a specific player getting carded, a team scoring an even number of goals or similar.

Ligue 1 Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies
It’s a good idea to put together a simple betting strategy before betting on the Ligue 1 action. Here are some simple tips to help you:
Always research a team’s form and check their head-to-head record against their opponents before including them in your betting slip. When you select a match at Stake, you’ll be able to see all the important stats to help provide more insights into which bets to place.
Home advantage often plays a role in team performance during soccer matches, so always check which team is at home before placing your bets. However, in Ligue 1’s previous season, home teams won 39% of games while the away team won 34%, so it’s only a small difference compared to some leagues.
You should also think about the impact that injuries are likely to have on a game week. For instance, if a big team is missing several key players, you might find value in backing their opponents, even if they’re the weaker team on paper. This is especially true for players who are the lynchpin of their team.
