What Are Asian Totals? - Asian Handicap Betting Guide

Two of the most popular types of sports bets at Stake.com are Asian totals and Asian handicaps. But how does this type of bet work, and how do you win with these wagers?

Read on to learn everything you need to know about Asian betting lines at Stake Sportsbook .

What Are Asian Totals & Asian Handicaps in Sports Betting?

Asian totals bets is a betting method that lets you predict whether the total goals or points scored will be over or under a specific number. On the other hand, Asian handicap betting is similar to spread betting, where you predict the margin of victory for one team (or player in single-person events like tennis).

While traditional totals and handicap bets generally have single numbers or half-point lines, the key difference with Asian markets is that they also have quarter-point market options.

To learn more about the differences between Asian and European handicap betting, check out our handicaps sports betting guide .

These markets are known as Asian handicaps and Asian totals due to the fact that they originated at sportsbooks in Indonesia and became especially popular across Asia.

How Does Asian Handicap Betting Work?

Before any sporting event between two opponents begins, sportsbooks calculate the difference in quality between them. From this, they create the odds, which show the implied probability of each team or athlete winning the match.

When there’s a significant difference in ability between the opposition, there’s often little value in a simple moneyline or match winner bet. However, handicap bets even the odds. At the start of the game, the underdog has a points advantage while the favourite has an equal disadvantage.

When you bet on a team with a handicap, they must overcome the handicap by scoring enough points or goals for your bet to be successful. However, if you bet on the team with the point advantage, they have to avoid losing by the value of the advantage.

With Asian handicaps, you can also make quarter goal line bets for reduced risk.

Single Asian Handicap/Total

With the single Asian handicap, the handicap will be based on either whole or half goals. For example, if you bet on Team A -0.5 vs Team B +0.5, Team A will need to win by at least one goal for your bet to be successful. If the result is a loss or draw, your bet will lose.

For whole goal handicaps, some results can cause a push, meaning your stake will be returned.

For example, if you bet on Team A -1 vs Team B +1 and Team A wins by just one goal, the handicap scores are level, so the result is a draw and you get your stake back.

Asian totals work in the same way. If you bet on over 2.5 goals, your bet will be successful if the total goal tally is 3 or more. If you bet on under 1 goal, you’ll need the score to remain goalless to win, but if the score ends 1-0 to either team, you’ll get your stake back.

Split Asian Handicap/Total

The split Asian handicap betting market introduces quarter goals. These include 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, etc. Betting on the quarter line can result in you half-winning your bet. For example, if you bet on -0.75, it splits your stake between the -0.5 and -1 goal lines. If the team wins by 1 goal, the -1 part of your bet is a push, meaning half your stake is returned. However, the -0.5 part of your bet is successful, so half of your stake is multiplied by the odds and your payout is awarded.

The split Asian total works in the same way. If you bet on over 0.75 goals, half your stake will be placed on over 0.5 and the other half will be placed on over 1. If 2 goals are scored, you’ll win the bet completely. If 1 goal is scored, you’ll win half and have the other half of your stake returned. If the game is goalless, you’ll lose.

What Does +0 or -0 Mean in Asian Handicap Betting?

In an Asian Handicap bet, 0+/- simply means that no advantage has been set for either team. This is also known as level Asian handicap/total betting and is common when the bookmaker thinks that both teams are evenly matched.

How Is It Different From the Standard Total Betting?

The main difference between traditional betting totals (over/under betting market) and the standard handicaps is that Asian totals and handicaps provide the option to bet on quarter lines. The quarter line means there are four different states for your bet. The bet can fully win, you can win half your stake, lose half your stake, or your bet could fully lose. This makes it a very flexible betting option, while offering the chance to make some money back even if your predicted outcome doesn’t occur.

How Are Asian Totals Calculated?

Fundamentally, Asian totals bets are divided into two wagers – you can receive 50% of your stake back if you “half lose” or 50% of your winnings if you “half win.” The sportsbook calculates your payout based on the odds presented at the time you placed your Asian total wager.

Advantages of Asian Totals & Handicap Betting

Asian sports betting markets are popular bet types as they have several benefits, including:

  • You receive additional coverage when placing an Asian totals bet, as you can half-win/lose a wager, helping you to recover some of your stake.

  • Asian totals and handicaps reduce the occurrence of push bets.

  • You can unlock greater value in your betting slip with Asian totals and handicaps, enabling you to place bets with more attractive odds.
