When and where the 2026 international football tournament takes place

The international football tournament will take place between 11 June and 19 July. Here are the key dates to be aware of when betting on the competition:

  • 11–27 June: Group Stage

  • 28 June–3 July: Round of 32

  • 4–7 July: Round of 16

  • 9–11 July: Quarter-finals

  • 14–15 July: Semi-finals

  • 18 July: Third-place match

  • 19 July: Final

This summer, the tournament returns to the USA for the first time since 1994. It’s jointly hosted by Canada and Mexico, with matches held at 16 venues in 16 host cities across the continent. These host cities and stadiums are:

  • Dallas, Texas - AT&T Stadium

  • Mexico City, Mexico - Estadio Azteca

  • East Rutherford, New Jersey - MetLife Stadium

  • Atlanta, Georgia - Mercedes-Benz Stadium

  • Kansas City, Missouri - Arrowhead Stadium

  • Houston, Texas - NRG Stadium

  • Santa Clara, California - Levi’s Stadium

  • Los Angeles, California - SoFi Stadium

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Lincoln Financial Field

  • Seattle, Washington - Lumen Field

  • Boston, Massachusetts - Gillette Stadium

  • Miami, Florida - Hard Rock Stadium

  • Vancouver, Canada - BC Place

  • Monterrey, Mexico - Estadio BBVA

  • Guadalajara, Mexico - Estadio Akron

  • Toronto, Canada - BMO Field

The final of the tournament will be held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, US.

How the new 48-team format works

48 teams are split between 12 groups of 4. Teams face each of their group opponents once, and the top 2 teams qualify for the first round of the knockout stages. Joining them will be the 8 best third-place teams.

From 32 to 48 teams: groups, the Round of 32, and what changed

While the format has been expanded, the group stage remains more or less the same. Teams will still be drawn randomly into groups of 4, but now there are 12 groups rather than 8.

The expanded format means that teams will now play up to 8 matches over the course of the tournament, with a new round added to the knockout stage. The round of 32 will now be the first knockout stage following the groups.

How the expanded format affects betting strategy

The new format with a greater number of teams means that there will probably be fewer shock results during the first stage. Higher-ranked teams will have a greater chance of progressing, especially as the 8 best third-placed teams will now advance to the knockout stage.

The expanded format also means more lower-ranked teams are taking part. This could result in higher-scoring games when lower-ranked teams face a stronger team. This means there are opportunities for betting on the over line for total goals in these matches.

Group-by-group betting preview

Here are the current odds for each of the 12 groups at this tournament:

  • Group A - Mexico is the favourite to advance, with Czechia and the Republic of Korea fighting for 2nd place while South Africa is an outsider.

  • Group B - Switzerland is the most likely to progress to the next round ahead of Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Qatar is likely to finish last.

  • Group C - Brazil are massive favourites to win the group, with Morocco most likely in second. Scotland has an outside chance of qualifying, while Haiti are extremely unfavoured.

  • Group D - Host country USA has a good chance of qualifying, but it’s close between them and Turkey. Paraguay are also a tough opponent, but Australia are unlikely to go through.

  • Group E - Germany are big favourites to qualify for the round of 32 ahead of Ecuador, while Ivory Coast and Curaçao are predicted to finish in 3rd and 4th.

  • Group F - Netherlands haven’t won the tournament before, but they’re expected to win their group. Japan are a tough opponent though, and Sweden have looked strong at times during qualifying. Tunisia are also a difficult opponent, but not expected to go through.

  • Group G - Belgium have a clear path to the knockout round and should finish ahead of Egypt, Iran and New Zealand.

  • Group H - Spain are current favourites to win the tournament and will almost certainly finish ahead of Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, but Uruguay are a tough opponent.

  • Group I - France are one of the favourites to win but have a difficult group to qualify from. They should progress, but they’ll need to get past Norway, Senegal and Iraq.

  • Group J - Argentina won the 2022 final and shouldn’t have any issues getting through to the round of 32 as group winners. Second place will likely be closely contested between Austria and Algeria, with Jordan in last place.

  • Group K - Portugal are the top team in group K, with Colombia and Congo DR unlikely to pose much of a threat. Uzbekistan are the weakest team in the group and will probably finish last.

  • Group L - England are one of the favourites to win the tournament, but they have some tough opponents to get past to reach the knockout rounds. First place will likely be between England and Croatia, while Ghana and Panama compete for 3rd place.
