Leon Edwards
After winning the welterweight title in dramatic fashion from Kamaru Usman with a head kick KO in the final minute of the fight, Edwards went on to defend the belt with a rematch against Usman and a win over Colby Covington. However, he was beaten over 5 rounds by Belal Muhammad, whose high output was too much for him. Although he’s still the number-one contender, he’ll need a win to get back in the title picture.
Sean Brady
Sean Brady is currently on a 2-fight win streak in the UFC, but he has only one loss in his professional MMA career, which was against the current champion, Belal Muhammad in 2022. His last two fights saw him submit Kelvin Gastelum and beat Gilbert Burns in a unanimous decision and a win in this fight would put him into title contention. Although most of his fights go to decision, Brady has 3 submission wins in 8 UFC fights.
Jan Blachowicz
After a close-fought split decision loss against current light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, Blachowicz was meant to rematch Aleksandar Rakic. However, it was cancelled due to the Polish fighter needing shoulder surgery. Now he’ll be entering the Octagon once more, following an almost 2-year absence. Since losing the belt in 2021, Blachowicz has one win, one draw and one loss.
Carlos Ulberg
Ulberg looks like a serious contender within the light heavyweight division. He’s now 11-1 in his professional MMA career, with his only loss coming in his first-ever UFC fight. As a training partner of Israel Adesanya, Ulberg has excellent striking and is currently on a 7-fight win streak in the UFC, including 2 performance of the night bonuses. He’s also great at getting finishes, with only 2 of his UFC fights ending in a decision.
Leon Edwards failed to perform in his last fight against Belal, losing the belt in a unanimous decision. It was his first loss in the cage since 2015. Although he has good grappling, Belal was superior in this aspect, and swarmed him to prevent him from utilising his striking skills.
Considering that both fighters have only lost to Belal Muhammad in recent times, this should be an interesting fight. It’s not a great matchup for Edwards, as Sean Brady will look to take him down and stifle his striking. Brady has excellent grappling skills, and for this reason, the current MMA odds show him as the betting favourite.
Jan is now 41 years old and coming back from a long layoff due to injury and the resulting surgery. Unfortunately, this doesn’t bode well for the former champion. Despite his impressive career, he may be drawing to the end of his time at the top of the rankings. As a result, the UFC odds show him as a significant underdog for this fight.
Ulberg is a bright prospect in the light heavyweight division, showing a lot of potential to be the next title contender. He’ll have to get through an ageing but highly experienced veteran. The current odds show him as the heavy favourite, but it’s unlikely to be an easy fight.
