What is the Volleyball Nations League (VNL)?
The FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League is an international volleyball competition contested by the highest-ranked teams in the world. Unlike professional leagues, it’s an international competition, not a club competition. It’s similar to the European League but available to countries from every continent.
The competition was launched in 2018 and has been played yearly since (excluding the Covid-19-affected 2020 season). It is widely regarded as one of the leading volleyball tournaments in the world. There is also a Nations League women’s volleyball tournament that was also first played in 2018.
When is the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Nations League?
The 2025 FIVB Volleyball Nations League runs from June 11 to August 3. The three weeks of pool play are contested in venues across the world, with Ningbo, China, hosting the final round.
History of the Volleyball Nations League
The concept for Nations League volleyball was launched in 2017 when the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) announced that it was planning to shake up the way international tournaments were contested. The following year, it announced that the Volleyball Nations League would replace the World Grand Prix and World League for both men and women. Today, 18 teams compete in the Nations League.
France is the most successful team in Nations League history, winning 2 gold medals and 4 total medals. Russia also has 2 gold medals, but no other top-3 finishes. Poland has the most medals, with 5, including 3 bronze medals.
